This e-course will help you understand the mechanisms and processes of Technology Transfer and Commercialization of Intellectual Property. Here, we are going to explore the whole journey of a researcher: from reporting about an invention, acquiring IP rights, - to licensing agreement with an industrial partner or newly created company – a spin-off.

About This Course

This course will help you understand Technology Transfer process, know the basic principles of how intellectual property (IP) rights are created and how they can be used, make the correct choice of the IP type and get started or continue with an effective strategy for protecting your IP. Upon completion of this course you will be also able to choose a model for commercialization of knowledge, inventions, and technologies.

Hopefully, the course will greatly enhance your ability to communicate and negotiate with scientists and manufacturers, management staff and lawyers – both within the organization and outside it, when you are challenged to bring innovation to the marketplace.


This course is designed for PhD students and Innovation center staff. It is taught in English.

Dmitriy B. Gakh

Dmitriy Gakh is a MSc in Applied Mathematics and a PhD Student in Institute of Control Systems, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. He is also a lecturer in Baku State University and a Software Developer in SINAM. He has more than 25 years of working experience in application of Information Technologies in sectors of Urban Infrastructure and Agriculture. His working international experience covers USA, UK, Germany, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. He has a huge experience in sector of R&D including:

- innovations in several Social Impact Studies (IFAD/Azerbaijan, ADB/Tajikistan) where data was collected and analyzed for identification of major factors that influence people welfare;

- building Computer Hydraulic Model of Water Supply in Samarkand and Bukhara including data gathering and processing;

- building modern model for Street Addressing (Kabul, 6.5 mln. Inhabitants);

- development of web portal www.GoMap.Az where many innovative methods were developed and applied, including data gathering, quality control, and transformation.

His teaching experience includes:

- providing Microsoft authorized trainings as a Certified Trainer and Certified Learning Consultant;

- developing Study Materials and providing lectures in Baku State University;

- developing original presentations (one presentation was developed in cooperation with University of Skövde/Sweden) on professional development and provide open seminars in Vinnytsia National Technical University (Ukraine) and Step IT Academy (Azerbaijan).
